The Art in Life: Knitting
Description
THE ART IN LIFE series explores the artistic creativity, innovation, challenges and aesthetic decisions of practices that usually aren’t considered fine art. Join Kluge-Ruhe and The Fralin for The Art in Life Knitting. Meet our panelists Louis Boria from Brooklyn Boy Knits, microknitter Althea Crome, Lauren MacElroy of Mother of Purl, and architectural knitters Jenny Underwood and Leanne Zilka of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Hear about their individual projects and learn how they are “moving the needle” from craft to art.

Louis Boria turned to Youtube to feed his curiosity for the art. What went from just knitting for friends turned into something much bigger and warmer. Stereotypes don’t paint men as knitters and Boria is breaking barriers through Brooklyn Boy Knits. His friends loved their handmade gifts so much that they soon told their friends and before he knew it Brooklyn Boy Knits was reaching people beyond Brooklyn. Lauren McElroy (@Mother of Purl) Lauren McElroy is a bi-racial, black, queer person living on Sioux, Ho Chunk, Sauk, and Meskwaki land in so-called Wisconsin. They are a multidisciplinary fiber artist and are known online as Mother of Purl. "Mother of Purl is my art endeavor where I offer my original patterns for hand knitting, my hand-spun yarn, and hand-dyed spinning fiber from local sheep, I also teach classes, and make commissions. " In addition to creating art at every available opportunity, Lauren is the mother of two young children, an herbalist, and an abolitionist. "I love to work with fiber and rejoice in every step of the process, from fleece to finished fabric". Jenny Underwood (Associate Dean, Fashion and Textiles Technology @Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) Jenny’s research is practice-based and interdisciplinary at the nexus of design, art, technology, and science. She is recognised internationally for her interdisciplinarity and as the leading expert in 3d seamless knitting. Her textile design practice brings together understandings of material behaviour, parametric design approaches, digital fabrication, and physical prototyping within the context of architecture, speculative and critical design, and fashion. What emerges are material-led design strategies to create complex forms that are lightweight, flexible, and efficient at scale. Jenny also researches and writes on fashion and textiles education for sustainability. Her current focus is on how relational connections between disciplines centerd on place and materials and the SDGs can support transformative learning experiences. Leanne Zilka (Lecturer of Architecture, School of Architecture and Design @Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) Leanne Zilka received her Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the University of New South Wales, and a Masters in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. In 2005 she founded ZILKA Studio and in 2007 joined RMIT University as a lecturer in Architecture. Leanne has been involved in developing a focus on materials and material research, establishing the Materials in Spatial design laboratory as part of the DRI at RMIT University. Leanne’s research has established a model for applying new and existing materials, using interdisciplinary design teams to explore the architecture and design possibilities with the aim of addressing issues in the built environment. These teams include textile design, material science, architecture, fashion design, industry and specialist research bodies. Leanne’s writings have been published in architecture and design journals and conferences. Althea Crome (Micro Knitter ) Indiana-based Althea Crome is a self-taught fiber artist who has pioneered conceptual knitting in small scale. As a miniaturist she appreciates the importance of scale, as a knitter she respects the art of traditional technique and pattern design and as an artist she rejoices in adaptation, discovery and experimentation. Althea's process of creating extreme knitting requires an incredible level of precision and skill to incorporate portraits, images and even personal narratives into her microscopic knitting. In order to achieve the level of detail required for her pieces, she makes her own knitting needles from surgical wire, some as small as .01 inches; she uses a fine silk sewing thread, rather than yarn, to achieve the tiny stitches that compose her works. Her needles can accommodate more than 80 stitches per inch. She designs her own original knitting patterns and adapts traditional patterns. Crome shares her love of micro knitting by teaching classes and workshops.
